National Science Foundation Grant Awarded To 5 OSU Students
Five Oklahoma State University students have been selected to receive more than a half a million in funding from the prestigious National Science Foundation.
Named NSF Graduate Fellows this spring are Lydia Meador, a Broken Arrow botany, biochemistry and microbiology senior; Laura Merriman, a Holdenville biosystems engineering senior; Taber Midgley, Durant biosystems engineering graduate student; Andrew Mock, an Edmond civil engineering senior; and Jessica Morrison, a Bay City, Michigan, microbiology graduate student.
The value of each three-year Fellowship is $121,500, according to Michael Heppler, assistant director of Student Academic Services for the graduate college. This includes $90,000 in funding paid directly as stipends to each student, plus $10,500 annually to cover tuition and fees and other ancillary support at the institution where each student chooses to study.
“The quality and success of OSU students is on full display with both undergraduates and graduate students bringing home such major awards,” said OSU President Burns Hargis. “We are proud of these extremely talented students and the faculty and others who supported them in their success.”

OSU Student Wins Armed Forces Distinguished Award for Service
Oklahoma State University student 1st Lt. Melanie Alvarez recently was awarded the Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Regional Distinguished Young AFCEAN award for her exceptional performance in the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.
The award is given to a young AFCEA member who shows a record of superior technical achievement and going “above and beyond” at the local chapter level.
“I am extremely proud to be recognized by my chapter and the AFCEA Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Region,” said Alvarez, a master’s student in OSU’s telecommunications program. “I have benefitted enormously from my membership, so to me this award indicates that the organization feels I contributed back and have helped others benefit as well.”

OSU Teams Earn First-ever Clean Sweep at Construction Competition
Three teams of Construction Management Technology students took home three first place trophies and made Oklahoma State University the first school to ever sweep all categories in the 16-year history of the Associated Schools of Construction Region V Student Competitions held last week in Dallas.
The teams, from OSU’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, competed against teams from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas in the annual contest, which includes categories for commercial building, design building, and heavy civil competition. Teams in each category face a 16-hour deadline to estimate and schedule (and sometimes design) a project and produce a proposal packet to present to the judges.
“The students put in a lot of time and effort to prepare a proposal and make a presentation in a competitive process that is very similar to what actual contractors do to acquire construction work,” said Heather Yates, associate professor, Construction Management Technology and coach for the commercial building team.
